Keep It Clean: Dos and Don’ts for Your Aligners and Retainers

Dental Retainer Cleaning

Clear aligners and retainers are essential tools for straightening your teeth and maintaining your smile after braces—but they only do their job well when they are clean. Without regular cleaning and proper care, these appliances can harbor bacteria, develop unpleasant odors, and even become discolored, making your orthodontic experience far less enjoyable.

At Tebo Orthodontics, we are committed to helping your smile stay healthy throughout your treatment. Here is a guide to cleaning your aligners and retainers the right way—and what you should avoid to prevent damage.

Daily Cleaning Routine for Aligners and Retainers

Just like your teeth, your aligners and retainers need daily care. Whether you wear Invisalign®, another clear aligner system, or a removable retainer, the steps below will help keep your appliance clean, fresh, and free of bacteria.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions:

  1. Rinse Every Time You Remove Them
Always rinse your aligner or retainer under lukewarm water when you take it out. This helps remove saliva and debris before it dries and hardens.
  2. Brush Gently with a Soft Toothbrush
Use a separate toothbrush (not your daily one) to gently scrub the inside and outside of the appliance. Avoid using toothpaste—more on that below!
  3. Use a Mild, Clear Liquid Soap
A small drop of clear, unscented dish soap and a soft brush can effectively clean aligners without clouding or damaging the material.
  4. Soak Regularly for a Deeper Clean
About 2–3 times a week, soak your aligners or retainers in a cleaning solution to kill bacteria and remove odors.

Best Products for Cleaning Aligners and Retainers

There are several safe, orthodontist-approved products that can help keep your aligners and retainers clean.  Some of these products include:

  • Retainer Brite Tablets
These fizzing tablets effectively kill bacteria and keep your retainer smelling fresh.
  • Invisalign Cleaning Crystals
Designed specifically for Invisalign trays, these crystals dissolve in water and provide a deep clean in just 15 minutes.
  • Denture Cleaning Tablets (e.g., Polident)
These tablets are gentle, affordable, and effective for cleaning retainers and aligners.
  • Antibacterial Liquid Soap (Fragrance-Free)
Great for quick cleanings—just be sure to choose one formulated without harsh dyes or chemicals.

What NOT to Do When Cleaning Aligners and Retainers

Even the best intentions can sometimes harm your appliance. Here is what to avoid:

Do Not Use Toothpaste

Toothpaste contains abrasive particles that can scratch aligners and retainers, making them cloudy and more prone to holding bacteria.

Do Not Use Hot or Boiling Water

High heat can warp the plastic, ruining the fit and potentially setting back your treatment.

Avoid Colored or Scented Soaps

These products can leave behind residue or dyes, and they often contain ingredients that are not safe for use in the mouth.

Do Not Use Bleach or Harsh Chemicals

Bleach can break down the material and cause irritation in your mouth. It is best to use products specifically formulated for oral appliances.

Tips for Long-Term Hygiene and Maintenance

  • Proper Storage: When not wearing your retainer or aligner, always store it in its case rather than in a napkin or on a countertop where it can collect germs or get misplaced.
  • Clean the Case Weekly: Bacteria can build up inside the case too. Wash it regularly with soap and water or disinfect it with a wipe.
  • Do Not Skip Cleanings: Aligners should be cleaned at least twice a day, while retainers—especially those worn overnight—should be cleaned once a day.
  • Replace When Recommended: If your aligner or retainer becomes damaged, warped, or discolored, contact us for a replacement.
