Some people enjoy their trips to the dentist. Others dread the possibility of extensive dental work. The two words patients fear the worst is “root canal.”
While the pain and recovery of the procedure seem daunting, a root canal is simple. A root canal is painful. The pain associated with root canals is caused by pulp infections, dying nerves, or broken teeth. A root canal treatment helps to relieve the pain.
During the procedure, the dentist takes precautions to prevent the patient from feeling pain. If necessary, a local anesthetic and nitrous oxide will be used to numb your mouth during the procedure, and you’ll be relieved from the true cause of pain in no time.
Teeth are healthy if they don’t hurt. A lack of pain does not mean your tooth is healthy. A dead tooth will have no feeling but requires a root canal to prevent an infection. The dentist tests your tooth’s pulp to determine if it requires root canal treatment. If you see a small bump, it could be a tunnel-draining pus from an infection. The infection might not be causing pain, but tissues will be damaged without proper treatment.
Root canal treatment requires many appointments. A follow-up appointment with your dentist is necessary after the root canal procedure. Whether you will require further appointments depends on several factors, including the infection’s severity and the procedure’s complexity. A root canal treatment can be completed in as few as one or two appointments.
